a thread🧵(1/12)
Over the span of the past year, we have seen countless videos of Israelis harassing tourists and spitting on Christians.
These are defended as "ancient customs" by Israeli leaders, but where do these traditions come from? pic.twitter.com/s0pyZI1rBP
THE TALMUD (2/12)

The Talmud is the primary text in Jewish law, providing context for Jews when reading the Torah
It is also defined as the "centerpiece of Jewish cultural life" and the "guide for the daily life of Jews", being foundational to all Jewish thought and aspirations. pic.twitter.com/vrbW7MMtv8
THE VATICAN VS THE TALMUD (3/12)

Until the year 1236, Christians saw Jews as nothing more than followers of the Old Testament.
That changed quickly when Nicholas Donin, a Jewish convert to Christianity, approached Pope Gregory IX with concerns about his experiences with Judaism pic.twitter.com/DuKua3hhLG

Not knowing about the Talmud, Pope Gregory IX was surprised to learn that Jews had other sources to rely upon when it came to theological questions
He was even more surprised to learn that these sources contained blasphemous passages about Jesus Christ, and the Virgin Mary pic.twitter.com/Af6DE1uju3

To prove his claims to the Pope, the former jew Donin translated the Talmud from Hebrew
In these translations, the Pope came to learn that Jews see the Talmud as a greater authority than the Bible, and that Jews require human sacrifices and blood in their passover rituals pic.twitter.com/cay7tGQlD3

The evidence presented by Donin led The Pope to issue a decree to all Christian Kings, urging them to gather all the Talmuds they could find in their countries and burn them.

(7/12) DISPUTATION OF PARIS
— The de Maistre Institute🏛️ (@deMaistreXIII) October 9, 2023
Often considered the model of the ideal Christian monarch, Saint Louis IX did not want to confiscate Talmuds without having a fair trial
This prompted Louis IX to order four of the most distinguished rabbis of France to answer Donin in a public debate pic.twitter.com/BLTeFyaIlj

Donin presented his claims that the Talmud included passages of Jesus Christ boiling in excrement for eternity, as well as 34 other claims of blasphemy.
The rabbis countered, saying that mentions of Jesus were of someone else- and not of Jesus in the New Testament. pic.twitter.com/xXGi8q2KO6

The rabbis failed to convince the court however- and in 1242, 2 years after the disputation, a verdict was passed.
King Louis IX required all French jews to wear a "Rouelle"- a round, yellow piece of fabric which would help authorities recognize Jews. pic.twitter.com/Rin3A9uGKO

Pope Innocent IV, who took over after Pope Gregory IX died in 1241, wrote Impia Judaeorum perfidia-
"The treachery of the ungodly Jews", a letter explaining that the children of Jews are fed lies and taught by the Talmud blasphemies against God and his son Jesus Christ. pic.twitter.com/JBBwSPnVY3

The biggest consequence that came from the disputation however, was when King Louis IX ordered the burning of 24 carts- or roughly 10,000 copies of The Talmud.
This amount was especially large in the year 1242, seeing as the printing press had not been invented yet. pic.twitter.com/rrLwPlSAc9

These consequences that came from the disputation caused many Jews, including the prominent Rabbis that argued on behalf of the Talmud, to emigrate to Palestine.
The Vatican also continued the systematic burning of Talmuds until the year 1775 because of the Disputation pic.twitter.com/DvULwcmQEQ
